In 1989, Dr. Ong U. Routh studied computational mechanics and obtained a PhD degree in Tsinghua University, China. In 1991, he worked as a researcher in Osaka University, Japan, developing finite element software for the numerical simulation of sheet metal forming. Since 1999, he has conducted many industrial software projects for the analysis of structures and multi-bodies systems. His career interest is in the research and implementation of numerical algorithms that is directly used to solve engineering problems, such as finite element analysis, multi rigid bodies analysis, differential equations and matrix computations.
I've bought many books about industrial and product design over the years and this one by far is well worth the money. The book begins with a short thumbnail introduction of the story of Route 66, and then heads into an east-to-west, state-by-state series of chapters. He manages to paint a world far different from ours in vivid detail and without the typical lens or moralizing one sees. I enjoyed these depictions and they did much to flesh out the old bones and give meaning to the artifacts described. As a teacher, I was expecting more in the way of children being able to truly practice skills that are challenging. It is the only one I ever go back to, even though I have had it for ages. The photos are understandably snapshot and Polaroid quality, and I would have liked more narrative from the actual guest-participants.
